New 16.6MP Full-Frame Stacked Sensor

At the heart of the FX5 is a newly engineered 16.6MP full-frame stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor designed for outstanding speed, dynamic range, and low-light performance.

Unlike conventional sensor designs, the stacked architecture dramatically increases readout speed, reducing rolling shutter artifacts while improving responsiveness during high-resolution recording and fast-moving scenes.

Internal Open Gate Recording

One of the FX5's standout capabilities is its support for 5K Open Gate recording.

Using the entire 3:2 sensor area, Open Gate capture records the maximum amount of image information, providing greater flexibility during post-production.

X-OCN (Extended tonal range Original Camera Negative) preserves the flexibility of RAW recording while using advanced compression to create more manageable file sizes.

Available recording options include:

• X-OCN LT — ideal for feature films, documentaries, television, and commercial production.
• X-OCN C1 — balances image quality and storage efficiency for everyday professional work.
• X-OCN C2 — optimized for extended recording times and productions where smaller file sizes are preferred.

Accessory Ecosystem: Expand Your FX5 Setup

Included XLR-H2 Handle Unit
The Sony FX5 includes the XLR-H2 Handle Unit, bringing professional 32-bit float audio recording to the FX series for the first time. This advanced recording format helps prevent clipping while preserving an exceptionally wide dynamic range, giving filmmakers greater confidence when capturing unpredictable audio. Beyond audio quality, the handle adds two XLR inputs, a built-in microphone mount, and dedicated physical controls for fast, precise audio adjustments during production.

Optional DVF-EL1 Electronic Viewfinder
For handheld shooting and working in bright outdoor environments, the optional DVF-EL1 Electronic Viewfinder provides a more comfortable and reliable monitoring experience. Connecting directly to the camera through its dedicated top-mounted interface, the EVF features a bright OLED display with a wide color gamut, high refresh rates, and excellent visibility in challenging lighting conditions. Its adjustable design tilts up to 90° for greater flexibility when shooting from high or low angles.

Please note that the DVF-EL1 Electronic Viewfinder and the included XLR-H2 Handle Unit cannot be used simultaneously due to the location of their mounting interfaces near the camera's Multi Interface Shoe.
