Product Description

Building on the success of its predecessor, the FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II Lens from Sony is an evolved and improved telephoto zoom lens for professionals. It is lighter than its predecessor but boasts performance improvements in every area of operation. This addition to the G Master series delivers increase sharpness with a minimum of aberrations with an optical design that includes an XA element, an aspherical element, two extra-low dispersion aspherical elements, two extra-low dispersion elements, and two Super ED elements. This optical design aslo features Sony's latest generation Nano AR II Coating that reduces reflections, flare, and ghosting for improved contrast and color.

Four XL Linear motors make autofocus fast, precise, and highly responsive for stationary subjects and for tracking, with two motors driving each of the internal focusing groups. The floating focus design divides the elements into two independently controlled groups for increased responsiveness, for both still and video applications, with speeds up to four times faster than its previous version design. The FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II lens is the first large-aperture tele-zoom lens with four linear AF actuators, which work to reduce focus breathing and focus shift while zooming. Direct manual focus is available full-time, and the linear response manual focus function changes the manual focus response based on the focus ring rotations speed.

Optimized for speed, this lens maintains a fast and constant f/2.8 aperture through the zoom range for easy use in low-light conditions, as well as for greater control over shallow depth of field. Smooth bokeh is achieved by the eleven-blade circular diaphragm for smooth out-of-focus areas. The newly developed aperture drive unit provides fast yet quiet operation.

The white lens barrel features three programmable focus control buttons, an AF/MF switch, a focus range limiter switch, and Optical Steady Shot control switches. Image stabilization combats camera shake, especially at longer focal lengths, and the added Mode 3 function increases framing stability when shooting moving subjects.

For durability and working in harsh environments, the lens is dust and moisture-resistant, and the front element features a fluorine coating to resist water and oil. The lens features a removable rotating tripod collar and a lens hood that provides access to rotate a separately available accessory polarizing filter.

  • As part of Sony's flagship G Master series, this lens is designed to achieve notably high resolution and sharpness through the correction of a wide variety of spherical and chromatic aberrations. Additionally, these lenses feature robust and intuitive-to-handle physical designs to benefit both photography and cine applications.
  • A popular 70-200mm telephoto zoom range designed for full-frame E-mount mirrorless cameras, this lens is also compatible with APS-C format cameras where it renders a 105-300mm equivalent focal length range.
  • The constant f/2.8 maximum aperture offers consistent performance throughout the zoom range and lends greater control over focus position for shallow depth of field techniques.
  • Two extra-low dispersion elements and two Super ED elements reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for increased clarity and color fidelity. Each optical surface has a Nano AR Coating II applied to reduce surface reflections, flare, and ghosting for increased contrast and color rendering in strong lighting conditions.
  • Four XD (extreme dynamic) Linear Motors ensure fast, precise, and accurate autofocus in both stills and video, with increased speed and improved tracking over the previous model, and reduced focus breathing, zoom shifting, and axis shifting for refined cine shooting.
  • Optical Steady Shot image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper imagery when shooting handheld with slower shutter speeds. This stabilization system can also be combined with a select camera's sensor-shift type image stabilization for more effective control of camera blur. An OSS Mode switch lets you choose Mode 1 for general image stabilization that is suited to most types of shooting, a Mode 2 setting that is designed for panning movements, and Mode 3 for emphasizing framing stability when shooting moving subjects.
  • The lens barrel is equipped with three programmable focus control buttons and a focus range limiter switch to permit fast, intuitive operation of the lens while shooting.
  • The front lens element features a fluorine coating to protect against smudges and dust from adhering to the glass surface. Dust- and moisture-sealed design better permits working in harsh environments.
  • A removable, rotating tripod mount permits quick switching from horizontal to vertical shooting orientations.
  • The included lens hood features a flocked interior for reducing glare and an opening that allows the convenient operation of separately purchased circular polarizing or other rotating filters.
  • Compatible with Sony's optional 1.4x and 2x teleconverters, this lens can be easily transformed into a 98-280mm or 140-400mm optic, respectively.

XA element for breathtaking resolution

Superior G Master resolution is achieved throughout the entire 70 mm to 200 mm zoom range at all focusing distances. Two aspherical lens elements, one an XA (extreme aspherical) type manufactured to 0.01-micron surface precision, effectively control distance-related aberration so that outstanding resolution is ensured throughout the image area.

Aberration controlled for superb images

Two spherical elements that use ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass, plus two more that use Super ED glass, significantly reduce chromatic aberration for sharp reproduction without color bleeding. ED aspherical element is also used, simultaneously suppressing chromatic and spherical aberration that are common issues in telephoto lenses.

Excellent close-up performance

This lens offers excellent close-up performance for a zoom. Minimum focus is 1.32 ft (0.4 m) at 70 mm and 2.69 ft (0.82 m) at 200 mm. Maximum magnification is 0.3x. Deep bokeh at F2.8 adds extra-expressive close-up capability. Floating focus ensures pinpoint sharpness even at minimum focus distance, while inner focus makes it easy to get close.

Nano AR Coating II for maximum clarity

Nano AR Coating II produces a uniform anti-reflection coating on lens surfaces, effectively subduing flare and ghosting. The lens's optical design also effectively suppresses internal reflections that can reduce clarity when shooting landscapes or sports.

Stunning G Master bokeh

An XA element manufactured to 0.01-micron surface precision suppresses onion ring bokeh, while precise spherical aberration control boosts bokeh quality. ED (extra-low dispersion) and Super ED glass spherical elements, plus one ED aspherical element, effectively minimize color bleeding for beautiful bokeh without unnatural coloration.

New high-performance aperture unit

Even the aperture unit in this lens has been refined to meet the highest G Master quality standards. A newly developed 11-blade aperture unit that remains almost perfectly circular, from wide open to stopped down by two stops, helps to deliver the kind of natural-looking circular bokeh users have come to expect from a G Master design.

Fast, precise autofocus

This lens works with α series bodies to reliably focus on and smoothly track even fast-moving subjects. Four high-thrust XD Linear Motors and advanced control technology deliver up to 4x1 faster AF than the SEL70200GM. Focus tracking capability while zooming is improved by approximately 30%2 compared to the SEL70200GM.

High-performance teleconverters3

Optional high-performance 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters3 extend the lens's focal length to a maximum of 400 mm (600 mm on an APS-C body) at F5.6. Full G Master quality is maintained when the teleconverters3 are in use. Maximum aperture with the 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters3 is F4 and F5.6, respectively.

Designed for refined movie imagery

The latest lens design technology reduces focus breathing, focus shift when zooming, and axis shift when zooming. XD Linear Motors and a newly developed aperture drive unit also contribute to quiet operation, greatly reducing noise and vibration that can interfere with movie recording.

Versatile manual movie control

Independent control rings for focus, zoom, and iris allow precise manual operation in movie applications. The aperture ring has a click on/off switch that allows the aperture click switch stops to be turned ON for tactile feedback when shooting stills, or OFF for smooth, silent iris control when shooting movies.

The world's lightest4 for superior handling

This unique lens offers outstanding optical quality and AF in the world's lightest4 F2.8 70–200 mm zoom. XD Linear Motors and magnesium alloy barrel components result in an overall weight of just 36.9 oz (1,045 g); approximately 29% lighter than the previous model. Advanced design improves overall balance and handling.

Iris lock stops unwanted exposure shifts

An iris lock switch prevents unwanted exposure changes while shooting. When locked, the aperture is either locked at the [A] position or can be rotated between any of the manual settings from F2.8 to F22. When unlocked, the aperture ring can be rotated between [A] and any of the manual settings without limitation.

Full-time DMF supports pinpoint focus

When the Full-time DMF is ON, manual focus is automatically engaged when the focus ring is operated, even in AF-C mode. This allows quick correction when autofocus targets the wrong subject, and is a great way to refine focus after initial autofocus. Full-time DMF is not affected by focus-range limiter switch settings.

Natural, linear manual focus response

Linear Response MF ensures that the focus ring responds directly and linearly to subtle control when focusing manually while shooting stills or movies. Focus ring rotation translates directly to a corresponding change in focus, so control feels immediate and precise when shooting stills or movies.

Optical image stabilization with MODE 35

Built-in optical image stabilization makes it easy to shoot sharp images handheld. MODE 2 stabilization is optimized for panning shots, while MODE 35 emphasizes framing stability when shooting dynamic, unpredictable motion. 5-axis image stabilization becomes available when the lens is mounted on an α body that has in-body image stabilization.

Three customizable focus hold buttons

Three customizable focus hold buttons are provided 90° apart for easy access and convenient control when shooting in horizontal or vertical orientation, and just about any angle. One function can be assigned to the focus hold buttons from the body menus.

Focus-range limiter

A focus-range limiter switch (FULL/∞–3 m) makes it possible to limit AF operation to a predetermined range to maximize AF speed and prevent focusing on unwanted objects.

Dust- and moisture-resistant design6

Dust and moisture resistance6 are notably improved compared to previous model7. All seams are sealed, buttons and switches have silicone rubber gaskets, and a rubber ring seals the lens mount. The internal zoom mechanism further resists dust and moisture6 while maintaining a constant lens barrel length.

Fluorine front-element coating

The front lens element features a fluorine coating that repels water, oil, and other contaminants, while making it easier to wipe off any contaminants or fingerprints that do become attached to the lens surface.

New lens hood design

The supplied lens hood features an opening that allows convenient operation of circular polarizing or variable ND filters. It also has a flocked interior that is highly effective in preventing unwanted reflections. Silicone rubber is used on the circular front edge of the hood to enhance overall usability.

Removable tripod mount

A removable tripod mount allows quick attachment to or removal from a tripod so the user can easily switch between tripod and handheld shooting. The mount can also be removed for convenient transport and storage. A lock mechanism prevents accidental removal.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ My latest experience with ThePixelConnection was absolutely phenomenal. Matt and Ari went above and beyond to ensure I got the camera I needed, even when it seemed impossible. The item I needed was out of stock everywhere else, but they didn’t stop there—they took the extra step to contact the manufacturer directly and managed to secure a new unit straight from the factory. Thanks to their incredible effort, I received my camera just in time for an important event. What truly sets ThePixelConnection apart is the personal touch they bring to every interaction. Unlike my experiences with B&H—which, while efficient and resourceful, often feel very clinical and transactional—ThePixelConnection makes you feel like a genuinely valued customer. I’ve worked with B&H for years and spent a small fortune with them, but if ThePixelConnection has what I need, they’re always my first choice. Their team is passionate, knowledgeable, and deeply committed to ensuring you get exactly what you’re looking for. Matt, in particular, is a seasoned professional with extensive expertise in photography and their product lineup. His guidance and dedication made the entire process effortless and stress-free. If you’re looking for exceptional service from a team that truly values its customers, look no further than ThePixelConnection. They’ve earned my loyalty, and I can’t recommend them highly enough!
