Product Description

Nikon Z8 Mirrorless Camera

Compact, Lightweight, Powerful

Built with technology inherited from Nikon’s flagship Z9, the Nikon Z8 delivers professional performance in a more compact and lightweight body. Designed as a versatile hybrid camera, it combines the Z9’s proven sensor, image processing, and autofocus capabilities with a streamlined body that is well suited for gimbal work, event photography, and handheld shooting.

45.7MP Stacked BSI CMOS Sensor

The Z8 features the same FX-format 45.7MP BSI stacked CMOS sensor introduced with the Z9, combining high resolution, fast readout speeds, excellent image clarity, and low noise. Its stacked design helps minimize rolling shutter distortion, while the BSI construction improves performance throughout the extended ISO range of 32-102400. The 45.7MP resolution is well suited to detail-intensive photography and supports video recording at resolutions up to 8K.

EXPEED 7 Image Processor

The EXPEED 7 image processor works alongside the stacked sensor to provide approximately 10x faster processing than the Z7 II. This combination enables fast autofocus, high-speed continuous shooting, a large buffer, smooth video performance, and responsive overall operation.

  • Continuous shooting at up to 20 fps in RAW
  • Up to 30 fps when shooting JPEG images
  • Up to 60 fps for 19MP JPEG images using a DX-area crop
  • Up to 120 fps for 11MP still images
  • All continuous shooting modes support full AF/AE performance
  • Buffer capacity for more than 1000 RAW images, allowing sequences of approximately 50 seconds
  • Playback lets you jump directly to the first frame of a burst for faster review
  • Pre-Release Capture records frames for up to 1 second before the shutter is fully released
  • Electronic shutter provides shutter speeds up to 1/32,000 sec.
  • AF calculations are performed at up to 120 fps to keep pace with high-speed continuous shooting
  • High Efficiency RAW maintains image quality similar to uncompressed RAW while reducing file sizes by approximately 30%
  • HEIF recording provides 10-bit images with a wider range of colors and greater realism and dynamic range on HLG-compatible displays
  • Motion Blend Retouch creates in-camera composites showing a series of subject movements within a single frame
  • Long Exposure display provides a live exposure timer on the rear LCD and can dim the viewfinder to help preserve night vision

Electronic Shutter-Only Design

The Z8 eliminates the mechanical shutter and relies entirely on an electronic shutter for all capture modes. The fast stacked sensor enables shutter speeds up to 1/32,000 sec., while its design helps reduce motion distortion when photographing fast-moving subjects such as golf clubs, baseball bats, and automobiles. Flash sync is supported at up to 1/200 sec., along with high-speed sync functions.

The electronic shutter also enables completely silent operation and eliminates concerns about mechanical shutter wear. A customizable shutter-release sound can be enabled when audible confirmation is preferred, with adjustable volume levels for different shooting environments.

Portrait Features

The Z8 combines its high-resolution sensor with dedicated processing and shooting features designed to produce natural, detailed portraits.

  • Fine-tune hue and brightness while shooting
  • Skin softening can be applied to up to three subjects while retaining important detail in the eyes and hair
  • Manual white balance adjustments provide intuitive control
  • Auto white balance is optimized for human subjects

Fast and Intelligent Autofocus

493-Point Phase-Detection AF

The 493-point phase-detection autofocus system covers the full sensor area for fast and precise focusing. High-speed communication through the Z interface and the sensor's processing capabilities allow AF calculations at up to 120 fps.

Starlight mode enables focusing down to -9 EV, making the Z8 particularly useful for astrophotography, concerts, and other low-light applications. Backlit AF uses dedicated sensor pixels to assist focusing in difficult backlit conditions without affecting the exposure of the captured image.

3D Tracking AF combines subject detection with precise tracking to follow fast and unpredictable subjects moving both parallel and perpendicular to the camera. Three Dynamic-Area AF modes provide different focus-area sizes for a variety of moving subjects.

Subject Detection with Deep Learning

Inherited from the Z9, advanced subject-detection algorithms and deep learning technology allow the Z8 to recognize a wide range of subjects, including people, animals, airplanes, and bicycles. In Auto-Area AF, recognized subjects can be automatically detected, focused on, and tracked as they move through the frame.

Eye-Detection AF provides refined eye recognition and focusing accuracy whether the eyes appear large or small in the frame. It can also be combined with custom Wide-Area AF settings to accommodate different subject shapes and sizes.

Video Powerhouse

Internal 8K60 and 4K120 Recording

The Z8 provides extensive video capabilities with recording resolutions and frame rates up to 8K. Using full-pixel readout, UHD 8K 30p video can be recorded continuously for approximately 2 hours and 5 minutes.

UHD 4K and Full HD recording are available at a variety of frame rates, including full-frame 4K at up to 120p for smooth slow-motion footage. Oversampled UHD 4K recording from an 8K area is available at up to 60p for enhanced sharpness and detail. The camera can also capture high-resolution still frames from 8K and 4K footage, producing 33MP and 11MP images, respectively.

12-Bit N-RAW and ProRes RAW

The Z8 supports internal 12-bit RAW recording at up to 8.3K 60p in N-RAW as well as internal ProRes RAW HQ. RAW video provides greater tonal and color flexibility, increased dynamic range, and additional latitude for color grading and post-production.

N-RAW is Nikon's proprietary RAW recording format, offering smaller file sizes than many other RAW formats and the ability to create MP4 proxy files for easier previewing and transfer.

N-RAW recording is available at:

  • 8.3K up to 60p or 24p
  • 4.1K up to 120p
  • 5.3K up to 60p with a 1.5x crop
  • 3.8K up to 120p with a 2.3x crop

ProRes RAW recording is available at up to 4.1K 60p.

ProRes and H.265 10-Bit Recording

Internal recording supports 10-bit color with 4:2:2 sampling in ProRes 422 HQ and H.265. H.264 and 4:2:0 color are also available for different workflow requirements. For additional flexibility during post-production, the Z8 offers 10-bit N-Log and Flat picture profiles, as well as HLG for creating HDR-ready footage directly from the camera.

Professional Video Tools

  • Red REC frame indicator on the EVF and LCD confirms active recording
  • Dedicated video information display shows frame size, frame rate, audio settings, codec, bit depth, and HDMI output information
  • Focus peaking and zebra stripes assist with focusing and exposure
  • Waveform monitor provides real-time exposure analysis
  • Fine ISO control in Manual mode enables 1/6-stop exposure adjustments
  • Fast AF-ON functions can be assigned to Fn buttons, with two different AF speeds assignable to separate buttons
  • Slow-shutter video supports shutter speeds slower than 1/frame rate for extreme low-light conditions or intentional motion blur
  • Timecode linking is supported when using an optional timecode generator
  • 24-bit linear PCM audio recording is supported

Sleek, Modular, and Durable Construction

Designed as the successor to the D850 and a smaller counterpart to the Z9, the Z8 balances professional performance with a more portable form factor. It is approximately 30% smaller than the Z9 and 15% smaller than the D850.

Unlike the Z9's integrated vertical grip, the Z8 uses a modular design that allows photographers to keep the camera compact for everyday use or add the optional MB-N12 Power Battery Pack for improved vertical-shooting ergonomics and extended battery life. Its lightweight body is also well suited for rigging and gimbal-based video production.

Dual memory card slots include one CFexpress Type B/XQD-compatible slot and one UHS-II SD slot. The CFexpress slot supports demanding applications such as 8K video recording and high-speed burst shooting, while the SD slot offers compatibility with widely available SD media.

Constructed from eco-friendly Seerebo carbon fiber and durable magnesium alloy, the Z8 weighs approximately 2 lb while maintaining a rugged build. Comprehensive weather sealing protects against dust and moisture for dependable operation in challenging conditions.

The included EN-EL15c battery provides approximately 340 frames per charge when primarily using the viewfinder or approximately 370 shots when primarily using the LCD monitor. The camera is also compatible with other EN-EL15-series batteries.

In-body Vibration Reduction supports Synchro VR for up to 6 stops of camera-shake compensation when used with select Z lenses.

A sensor shield helps protect the sensor surface from dust when changing lenses, while dual electro-conductive and fluorine coatings on the optical filter provide additional dust protection. Backlit buttons make controls easier to identify when shooting in low-light environments.

Real-Live Viewfinder

The 3.69m-dot OLED EVF features adjustable brightness up to 3000 cd/m² for clear visibility in bright conditions. Dual-stream technology provides blackout-free viewing during continuous shooting, while a high-fps mode increases the refresh rate to 120 fps for smooth, lifelike viewing.

Nikon NIKKOR Z 180-600mm f/5.6-6.3 VR Lens

Versatile Super-Telephoto Zoom

The Nikon NIKKOR Z 180-600mm f/5.6-6.3 VR Lens delivers exceptional super-telephoto reach and sharpness throughout its expansive zoom range. Designed for Nikon Z-series mirrorless cameras, it is an excellent choice for wildlife and sports photography, providing an impressive focal-length range in a relatively compact and lightweight design.

Advanced Optical Design

The lens incorporates six ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) glass elements to improve light transmission and minimize color dispersion, helping suppress chromatic aberrations and color fringing for clear, color-accurate images throughout the zoom range.

A single aspherical element helps reduce distortion and coma at wide apertures while contributing to a more compact and lightweight design. A fluorine coating on the front element repels dust, water droplets, grease, and dirt, making contaminants easier to remove. Its anti-reflective properties also help maintain image clarity.

Fast Autofocus and Vibration Reduction

An STM stepping motor provides fast, accurate, smooth, and quiet autofocus with reduced wobbling, making it suitable for both still photography and video. The A/M Auto-Priority Manual mode allows for a smooth transition from autofocus to manual focus during AF operation.

The internal focusing design keeps the lens at a consistent length during focusing and zooming while maintaining a compact form factor and close focusing capability.

With a minimum focusing distance of 4.3' and a maximum magnification of 0.25x at the 180mm position, the lens can capture detailed close-ups of subjects.

The built-in optical Vibration Reduction system compensates for camera shake with an effect equivalent to using a shutter speed 5.5 stops faster. This helps reduce blur when shooting handheld or panning to follow fast-moving subjects.

Practical Handling

A 70° rotation of the zoom ring takes you from 180mm to 600mm, allowing you to quickly locate subjects at the wide end before moving to tight framing with the compression characteristic of a super-telephoto focal length.

A customizable control ring and function buttons provide convenient access to exposure settings and other functions. The rotating tripod collar provides stable mounting when working from a tripod or monopod.

Durable Construction

The weather-sealed lens barrel helps protect against challenging environmental conditions, while the fluorine-coated front element provides additional protection against dust, moisture, grease, and dirt.

Teleconverter Compatibility

Compatible with Nikon Z-series teleconverters, the lens can extend its effective focal length to 840mm with the 1.4x teleconverter or 1200mm with the 2x teleconverter.
