Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM II Lens

Sony unveils the FE 85mm F1.4 GM II (SEL85F14GM2), a high-end lens that combines exceptional resolution, smooth bokeh, and rapid autofocus (AF) in a compact, lightweight design. As the second generation of this lens, it builds upon the optical foundation of its predecessor while integrating Sony's latest G Master™ technologies for enhanced performance. This lens is the 76th addition to the E-Mount lineup, optimized to fully utilize the capabilities of Sony’s latest Alpha™ series full-frame cameras. With its large aperture and telephoto prime design, it's an excellent choice for portrait photography, weddings, travel, and cinematic video.

Superior Optical Performance & Stunning Bokeh
The FE 85mm F1.4 GM II boasts a refined optical design with advanced elements, delivering both high resolution and smooth bokeh—ideal for portrait photography. The lens features two XA (extreme aspherical) and two ED (extra-low dispersion) elements that effectively minimize aberrations, providing edge-to-edge sharpness and exceptional image quality.

Sony’s original Nano AR Coating II technology is also included, reducing flare and ghosting for sharp, clear images. The 11-blade circular aperture produces the beautiful, soft bokeh characteristic of G Master lenses.

Fast, Accurate Autofocus & Enhanced Subject Tracking
The FE 85mm F1.4 GM II's autofocus capabilities have significantly improved, making it ideal for both portrait photography and cinematic video. AF speed is up to three times faster than the previous model, allowing users to precisely track moving subjects. Subject tracking has also improved by up to seven times. These advancements enable the lens to fully support features on Sony’s latest camera bodies, such as continuous shooting up to 120fps on the Alpha 9 III.

Lightweight Design Without Compromise
The second-generation FE 85mm F1.4 GM is approximately 20% lighter and 13% smaller in volume compared to the original, weighing around 642 grams (22.7 oz). This reduction is achieved through cutting-edge mechanical and optical design. The lens has a filter diameter of 77mm, a diameter of 84.7mm (about 3 3/8 in), and a length of 107.3mm (about 4 1/4 in).

Perfect for Cinematic Content Creation
With its large F1.4 aperture and compact form, the FE 85mm F1.4 GM II is ideal for cinematic video production. The lens features an XD (extreme dynamic) linear motor with internal focusing, quiet AF, and linear response manual focus (MF). Focus breathing is minimal, and in-body focus breathing compensation is supported.

Thanks to Sony’s versatile one-mount E-Mount system, this lens is compatible with Sony’s latest mirrorless Alpha cameras and the Sony Cinema Line, including the Sony BURANO.

The FE 85mm F1.4 GM II is designed for ease of use, with two customizable focus hold buttons, an AF/MF switch, an independent aperture ring, and Linear Response MF focus control for intuitive operation. The front lens element features a fluorine coating, making it easy to clean, while the dust and moisture-resistant design ensures reliable performance in challenging outdoor conditions.
