Its fast autofocus, advanced Optical SteadyShot stabilization, and dust- and moisture-resistant construction make it an ideal choice for handheld shooting, whether you're photographing sports from the sidelines or wildlife in challenging outdoor environments.

Optimized for Handheld Shooting

Designed to overcome the size and weight challenges traditionally associated with super-telephoto lenses, the FE 400mm f/4.5 GM OSS is easy to carry and comfortable to use throughout a full day of handheld shooting. Its f/4.5 maximum aperture helps maintain a compact and lightweight profile without significantly sacrificing light-gathering capability, while Optical SteadyShot further supports handheld operation.

A single front element shifts the lens's center of gravity closer to the camera body, creating a well-balanced setup that is comfortable to handle. Measuring just 9.5" long and weighing approximately 2.2 lb, the lens has a footprint closer to a 70-200mm f/2.8 than a traditional super-telephoto prime.

Compared with the FE 400mm f/2.8, the f/4.5 version is 4.2 lb lighter and 4.6" shorter, making it significantly easier to transport and use without a tripod.

High-Speed Autofocus and Powerful OSS

Built for speed, accuracy, and dependable performance, the FE 400mm f/4.5 GM OSS combines an advanced autofocus system with powerful optical stabilization for sports, wildlife, and other fast-moving subjects.

Two XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors deliver fast, responsive autofocus while maintaining smooth and quiet operation. The focusing system supports continuous still-image and video shooting speeds of up to 120 fps. Full-time manual focus override is also available, while the internal focusing design maintains the lens's overall length during operation and helps promote faster focusing performance.

A focus range limiter and four focus hold buttons provide additional control over autofocus behavior, helping you maintain responsiveness and avoid missing critical moments.

The Optical SteadyShot image stabilization system helps produce sharper images during handheld shooting and offers three stabilization modes: Standard (Mode 1), Panning (Mode 2), and Moving Subjects (Mode 3).

G Master Optical Performance

As part of Sony's G Master lineup, the FE 400mm f/4.5 GM OSS is designed to deliver exceptional sharpness, smooth bokeh, fast responsiveness, and high overall optical performance in a uniquely compact telephoto prime.

Super ED and ED glass elements help suppress chromatic aberration while maintaining high edge-to-edge sharpness, even when shooting at the maximum aperture. This provides greater flexibility when cropping images or making detailed edits.

Nano AR Coating II helps suppress flare and ghosting for improved contrast and rich color reproduction across a variety of lighting conditions.

An 11-blade rounded diaphragm contributes to smooth, circular bokeh and gradual focus falloff, helping separate subjects from their backgrounds with a pleasing appearance.

Professional Operability and Durable Design

The included tripod foot can be easily removed when maximum portability is desired, creating a slimmer setup for handheld shooting. A customizable Function Ring can be assigned to a variety of camera and exposure settings for quick access to frequently used controls.

The lens barrel features an intuitive control layout, placing frequently used buttons and switches within easy reach so you can adjust settings without taking your eye away from the viewfinder.

A dust- and moisture-resistant design incorporates rubber gaskets at each seam along with a rubber ring around the lens mount for added protection when shooting in challenging weather conditions. The front element features a fluorine coating that helps repel water, oil, and other contaminants while making the lens easier to clean.

A 95mm front filter thread allows the use of screw-in filters for additional creative control. The hybrid construction combines metal and plastic components to balance durability with portability.

Teleconverter Compatibility

The FE 400mm f/4.5 GM OSS is compatible with the separately available Sony FE 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters while retaining full autofocus and auto-exposure functionality.

With the 1.4x teleconverter, the lens provides an effective focal length and maximum aperture of 560mm f/6.3. The 2.0x teleconverter extends the reach to 800mm f/8, giving photographers additional flexibility when working with distant sports and wildlife subjects.
