Short description

For sale is a beautiful vintage Polaroid Model 80A Highlander Land Camera, a classic piece of mid-century Americana featuring the desirable EV (Exposure Value) Scale shutter system. This kit is a collector’s dream, including the period-correct Polaroid Wink-Light Model 250 and the Polaroid Meter Model 625 light meter. The camera has been fully tested and works properly (mechanically), with the bellows remaining light-tight and the folding mechanism operating smoothly. The camera body is in good condition, exhibiting character-building finish loss and scratching typical for a 1950s-era device. The glass elements and aperture ring are in good condition, though they do show some minor imperfections. While these may slightly affect image contrast or flare, they often contribute to the nostalgic, ""dreamy"" aesthetic sought after by instant film enthusiasts. Included Accessories & Notes: Polaroid Meter Model 625: A dedicated accessory that clips onto the camera to help calculate exposure. Polaroid Wink-Light Model 250: This vintage flash unit is included to complete the set. Please note the internal battery is dead; as a result, the flash unit could not be tested and will require a battery replacement to function. Film Compatibility: Note that this camera originally used Type 30 series roll film, which is no longer in production. It is currently ideal as a high-end display piece or for advanced hobbyists who perform ""instant-back"" or 120-film conversions.

Product Description

The Polaroid 80A Highlander is a classic instant roll-film camera produced between 1957 and 1959, serving as a more compact and portable alternative to the larger Land Cameras of its era. This model is distinguished by its "EV Scale" (Exposure Value) system, which simplifies exposure by linking the shutter speed and aperture to a single numerical value ranging from 10 to 17. The camera features a 100mm f/8.8 three-element glass lens and an "everset" rotary-leaf shutter with two fixed speeds of 1/25 and 1/100, plus a Bulb setting for long exposures. Its self-erecting bellows design and rigid viewfinder provide a tactile, vintage shooting experience that is highly sought after by collectors of mid-century Americana.

Constructed with a durable steel body and a textured brown finish, the 80A Highlander was designed for "thrifty" consumers, yielding smaller 2.5 by 3.25-inch prints. The lens utilizes a front-element scale focus system, where the user estimates the distance to the subject and rotates the lens accordingly. This specific "A" iteration of the Highlander series updated the original design with polished steel accents on the focus ring and internal mechanical refinements. Because it was built to accommodate the 30-series instant roll film—which ceased production in the late 1970s—the camera’s physical integrity, including the condition of the light-tight bellows and the cleanliness of the developer rollers, is a primary focus for the modern buyer.

In today's market, the Polaroid 80A is valued both as a sophisticated display piece and as a prime candidate for creative modifications. While the original instant film format is no longer available, the camera's internal dimensions allow for popular "darkroom hacks," such as adapting it to shoot 120 medium format roll film or installing 3D-printed backs for modern instant film types. Its all-mechanical operation means it does not require batteries to function, making it a reliable mechanical artifact. For enthusiasts, the presence of the original M-sync hot shoe also offers the potential for synchronized flash photography, provided the mechanical shutter remains snappy and clear of debris.
