The Nikon TC-200 2X Teleconverter is a vintage manual-focus teleconverter designed for Nikon F-mount AI and AI-S lenses, doubling the effective focal length of compatible lenses while maintaining the original minimum focusing distance. Built during Nikon’s classic manual-focus era, the TC-200 gave photographers an affordable way to extend telephoto reach without carrying an additional long lens, making it particularly useful for wildlife, sports, and nature photography.
When mounted between the camera body and lens, the teleconverter multiplies focal length by 2x, turning a 200mm lens into an effective 400mm optic. As with most teleconverters, this comes with a two-stop loss of light, so an f/2.8 lens effectively becomes f/5.6 once attached. The TC-200 is fully manual and was designed primarily around Nikon’s AI-era lenses, pairing especially well with longer Nikkor telephoto primes and zooms from the same period.
Physically, the unit features Nikon’s durable metal construction and compact design typical of its professional accessories from the late film era. While autofocus and electronic communication are not present, it remains popular among vintage Nikon shooters and photographers adapting classic F-mount glass to modern mirrorless systems.
