Product Description
The Minolta AF 35-80mm f/4-5.6 is a compact, lightweight standard zoom lens introduced in the early 1990s as a versatile kit lens for the Maxxum/Dynax SLR series. Designed for portability, it covers the most essential focal lengths for everyday photography, ranging from a moderately wide 35mm—ideal for street scenes and group shots—to an 80mm portrait length. This lens is particularly noted for its "Power Zoom" or "xi" variants released alongside the xi-series cameras, though the standard AF version remains a popular, straightforward choice for film photographers who value a minimalist setup.
Technically, the lens features an 8-element in 7-group optical construction and uses a mechanical screw-drive autofocus system that relies on the camera body's internal motor. It has a minimum focusing distance of approximately 0.38 meters (1.25 feet) throughout the zoom range, allowing for decent close-up capabilities. The aperture diaphragm consists of 7 blades, providing a relatively smooth background blur for a variable-aperture lens. With a 49mm or 46mm filter thread (depending on the specific generation), it is easily paired with common polarizers and ND filters.
For the modern enthusiast, this lens is a "sleeper" value in the Minolta A-mount ecosystem. While it lacks the fast f/2.8 aperture of professional "G" glass, it retains the classic "Minolta color" rendering—a warm, high-contrast look that translates beautifully to both film and digital sensors. Because it uses the standard A-mount, it is fully compatible with every Minolta AF SLR produced since 1985, as well as Sony Alpha DSLRs and (via an LA-EA adapter) Sony mirrorless cameras. Its plastic-barrel construction makes it one of the lightest lenses in the system, perfect for a "travel-light" kit.
