Its dedicated photo and video modes make switching between cinematic footage and high-resolution still photography effortless, with the ability to capture 32MP photographs at up to 40 fps.
Additional professional features include Dual Pixel CMOS AF II, dual-base ISO, simultaneous 2K crop recording, built-in Frame.io Camera-to-Cloud integration, and extensive remote-control capabilities through Canon's XC Protocol. The included detachable top handle adds professional audio connectivity with two full-size XLR inputs and convenient onboard recording and zoom controls.
7K Full-Frame CMOS Sensor
At the core of the EOS C50 is a newly developed 7K full-frame CMOS sensor designed to deliver detailed images with excellent tonal reproduction and low noise across a wide range of lighting conditions. With more than 15 stops of dynamic range in full-frame sensor mode, the camera captures impressive detail in both highlights and shadows.
The high-resolution sensor also provides greater flexibility during post-production, allowing filmmakers to create oversampled 4K footage at up to 60 fps while retaining exceptional detail and image quality.
3:2 Open Gate Recording
The EOS C50 introduces Open Gate recording to the Cinema EOS lineup, capturing footage using the full dimensions of its 3:2 full-frame sensor. This provides access to the entire imaging area, giving editors greater freedom to crop, reframe, and deliver footage in different aspect ratios during post-production.
Open Gate recording is particularly useful for productions requiring multiple deliverables, social media content, and anamorphic workflows, where additional image information provides greater creative flexibility.
Internal RAW Recording and High Frame Rates
The C50 offers a comprehensive selection of professional recording formats to accommodate demanding production requirements. Capture full-frame 7K video at up to 60 fps using Cinema RAW Light, with three available 12-bit recording options: HQ, ST, and LT.
For additional flexibility, the camera supports 10-bit 4:2:2 XF-AVC recording at frame rates up to 120 fps without cropping. High-speed recording options also include up to 4K120 and 2K150, making it easier to capture detailed slow-motion footage.
XF-AVC S and XF-HEVC S formats provide efficient file management through organized folder structures, simplified file naming, and metadata preservation, helping streamline editing and post-production workflows.
Built-In Anamorphic De-Squeeze
Designed with professional anamorphic workflows in mind, the EOS C50 features internal anamorphic de-squeeze monitoring. Users can select from 2x, 1.8x, 1.5x, and 1.3x de-squeeze ratios through the camera menu to preview footage with the correct proportions while shooting with compatible anamorphic lenses.
Dual-Base ISO for Enhanced Low-Light Performance
The EOS C50 features dual-base ISO settings of 800 and 6400 when recording in Canon Log 2, helping maximize the sensor's dynamic range across different lighting conditions. An automatic ISO selection mode can switch between the two base sensitivity levels and other ISO settings, providing greater convenience while maintaining image quality.
Advanced Dual Pixel CMOS AF II
Canon's Dual Pixel CMOS AF II system delivers fast, accurate, and reliable autofocus, even when recording at demanding high frame rates. The improved sensor light-capturing efficiency expands the usable autofocus area, helping maintain consistent subject tracking throughout the frame.
Powered by advanced deep-learning subject recognition, the system supports face and eye detection for both humans and animals, including birds. Users can also prioritize the left or right eye for more precise focus control. With autofocus support during high-speed recording, the C50 helps keep moving subjects sharp in everything from standard footage to slow-motion sequences.
Simultaneous 2K Crop Recording
The EOS C50 streamlines content creation by allowing users to record a cropped version of the image simultaneously with their primary DCI or UHD 4K recording. Choose from three crop aspect ratios: 9:17, 9:16, or 1:1.
The cropped footage is saved separately at 2K resolution, making it easier to produce vertical and square content for social media platforms without requiring extensive reframing during editing. This feature helps reduce post-production time when creating multiple versions of the same video.
Dual Card Slots for Flexible Recording
The camera features two different media slots: one CFexpress Type B slot and one SD card slot. Both support simultaneous recording, including when capturing RAW footage.
Primary recording files are saved to the CFexpress card, while proxy and sub-recording files can be directed to the SD card. This flexible configuration provides an efficient workflow for productions that require backup footage or streamlined editing files.
Native Vertical Shooting Interface
Designed to simplify vertical video production, the EOS C50 includes a dedicated vertical shooting interface that automatically reorients the display and camera controls for portrait-format recording.
The interface adjusts shooting information, menu settings, and LCD brightness controls to suit vertical operation. Touchscreen start and stop recording controls remain accessible, making it easier to create content for social media and other vertical video platforms.
Detachable Top Handle with Professional XLR Audio
The included detachable handle unit expands the camera's functionality while providing convenient controls for handheld and low-angle shooting. Two full-size 3-pin XLR audio inputs with 48V phantom power allow connection of professional microphones, including shotgun microphones, for high-quality external audio recording.
The handle also incorporates a dedicated start/stop recording button and a zoom rocker, keeping essential controls within easy reach during operation.
